The discussion of David taking on acting in a film has re-surfaced as recent rumours emerged that a film role could be in the offing when he returns. Are we gasping in joy about the possibility of seeing him on the big screen? Or are we gasping in horror that he could be distracted from producing music? Tracy had written something to that effect when the news of Nandito Ako first broke out.
Much to our gratification and relief, acting the role of Josh Bradley had proven that David CAN act with a respectable degree of conviction. We all know that he emotes beautifully in all genres and moods of songs. But is he able to tackle more challenging acting roles as effectively as he sings? NA is a soap opera so, whether we like it or not, it is of a totally different genre of art altogether.
From what I read about basic acting skills, he would need to learn a multitude of things pertaining to “understanding acting”, amongst many other things: pace of action and words … an ability to create a believable character … to improvise … a precise manner to impact … an ability to create an atmosphere … suitable diction … an ability to sustain dramatic inaction … and hundreds of other things…
David is a perfectionist when it comes to singing. Will he want to take on more demanding tasks such as those above to reach a sense of perfection too in acting? My own feeling is David is an “instinctive actor”, and that would carry him far in any role. But, lacking in experience, he would still need to collect some esoteric knowledge and training.
If he does reach out to acting, what kind of roles do you think he can handle?
What roles would suit him best?
What kind of roles do you think will attract him?
Let’s have a little investigative speculation – as we always do. 🙂
“REBEL WITH A CAUSE” ?
-Inspired by the 1955 drama film “Rebel Without A Cause” about emotionally confused suburbian delinquents. Taking on an anti-hero part, James Dean turned into a cultural hero in real life. Yes, I would love David becoming his own brand of a real-life cultural hero.
‘PIED PIPER” ?
A Piper.. ok a guitarist/pianist then…who leads thousands into a faraway blissful archuland.
“DRACULA’S FIRST KISS” ?
This would be fun huh? Especially the 1st kiss part. 😉 And didn’t he like dressing up as Dracula when he was a kid?
“ALADDIN” ?
An adventure-type hero..perhaps with Simon Cowell as the genie?
“SOUND OF MUSIC” ?
As a male nanny. I like this one. The sounds of a monastery would suit David. And teaching children how to sing would be an amazing story-line.
“GREASE” ?
Try to imagine David with greasy hair!!….cough!…cough!…
“THE INVISIBLE MAN” ?
Naaaaah….! Not this one….who wants an invisible David?!
“LES MISERABLES” ?
In the role of Marius. Empty Chairs At Empty Tables would be a long-awaited dream come true!!
“EVITA” ?
In the role of Che. Perhaps the character would be of too much cynicism for David. But then, he can learn to LOOK cynical and ACT angry, can’t he? – that’s the whole point about acting. 😉
“DAVID POPPINS” ?
You know … the Umbrella Connection. David floating to earth with an umbrella would totally kill us!
“WEST SIDE STORY” ?
Just imagine David singing “Tonight”!!
Best of all, a film with David as himself in a biographical musical called “David Archuleta”!! Eeeeeeekkk…!! We archies may even get cameo roles as his Archangels! Or at least appear (disappear?) in a crowd scene. Nice crazy thought. 😀
