Today is a Speshul day for our very dear Shu!
Thank you so much for everything you have done for so many of us over the years – seemingly little things like giving rides to the younger ones to and from stadiums/bus stops/train stations/you name it, organizing and executing our sometimes over-ambitious plans almost single handedly, constantly encouraging and advising as a caring mother figure and friend, always willing to lend a helping hand or give a kind word to any of us in need of it..These are just some of the many wonderful ways you have blessed so many of us here and yet the least we can do is just say, “THANK YOU” and give you a BIIIIIIG e-hug and sending lots of love your way! We wish you nothing but the best and many more wonderful memories and days ahead!
Who or what is a fan? The dictionary defines it as “an enthusiastic admirer.” Sounds harmless enough but did you know that the word ‘fan’ is a shorter variant of the original “fanatic?” In this case the definition is a lot less innocuous as a fanatic is described as someone whose enthusiasm borders on the extreme and goes beyond normal limits.
We are all fans of some kind at some stage of our lives. Many of these fixations come and go, ebb and wane as time passes. On the whole our admiration of the person doesn’t go beyond the surface. We listen to their music, buy the books, wear the clothes, go for the concerts and that’s it. For all intents and purposes they are a complete stranger to us, far removed from our everyday existence and really does not configure significantly in our lives or consciousness. By the same token the recipient of our admiration really doesn’t know us from Adam and in most cases wouldn’t give a fig.
It is when we go beyond all normal boundaries that the drama unfolds. The danger lies in the mistaken belief that we are more than fans and that somehow, someway we play a far more significant part than is warranted. Granted any celebrity’s relevance and career advancement depends on the degree to which he/she can garner support in the form of fans. After all even the best critical reviews do not put food on the table, one still needs the mullah that the buying public can bring. These are the real critics as far as the artist is concerned.
But to what extend do we feel we have the right to denigrate and critique all that goes on in an artist’s life? Is it within our the right to demand, command and dictate the what, whys and hows? Can we preach with self-righteousness and criticize the people and circumstances that the artist have chosen to surround himself with? Who are we to say that so and so is causing damage to the artist’s career and therefore should be sent back to the farm so to speak? When were we the appointed managers and minders? So much so that we insist and persist in our unrealistic expectations of the artist’s decisions and choices of who, what, why, where and how?
Some public figures are notoriously reclusive. They guard their privacy with pit bull tenacity and threaten all manner of legal ramifications and in some cases even physical abuse towards all who trespass. I could never understand the mentality of such celebrities because I feel that the fact that they have chosen a profession that is so publicly visible they have to accept a certain amount of intrusion into their private lives. It goes with the territory. But at the other end of the spectrum there are those who are almost an open book. They allow fans such a high degree of access, especially in these times of the internet and social media where your every thought can be instantly communicated to the online community, that people begin to feel entitled. Rightly or wrongly fans develop an intimacy with their idol to an unhealthy level in my opinion.
In many cases they stalk their idol and poses a real danger. We have heard and read of so many cases of fans having to be legally restrained from any contact with the artist and in some situations their fixations manifests in tragic and violent forms. A famous example would be actress Jodie Foster where a fan became so obsessed with her that he attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagen in order to “impress her”. Hopefully there are none of us like that at AAM!
I feel that our role as fans should never go beyond acceptable limits. We must be respectful of the unspoken boundaries and never think that we have the right to call the shots for there is a line that we must not and should not cross. Who or what the artist chooses to associate himself/herself with is strictly none of our concern and we must not think that it is acceptable to disparage and condemn simply because we are fans.
“I came, I saw, I conquered”
In three short, succinct statements Gaius Julius Caesar declared mastery over the Roman world, arguably the most powerful individual on Earth during his time. His terse but precise pronouncement of absolute authority over his subjects lives on till this day as an example of the special powers of the number 3.
Our civilization is filled with folklore of the numeral 3 and it’s magical character. Indeed from antiquity to the present time anything that comes in threes is deemed more complete and satisfying. The cosmos itself exists so beautiful yet mysterious all due to the influence of the number 3 and it’s geometric laws. All manner of human endeavors like mathematics, art, architecture, music, design etc has been rendered more pleasing and harmonious because of the number 3 and it’s various geometric forms. It is often said that good things not only come to those who wait but they also come in 3s and that the third time’s the charm.
Some examples: The holy trinity, faith-hope-love, “Three times a lady”, wine-women-song 😉 , body-mind-spirit, three cheers, the Genie always grants us 3 wishes……and the list goes on. Perhaps you dear readers can add to the list?
We’re nearly 3 years old. A fledgling by most reckoning even though much water (some of which were decidedly turbulent) has flowed under the bridge since our beginnings. 3 years ago when we began this journey little did we know the ups and downs, highs and lows that we would go through and the myriad of IT and social media skills that we would have to learn on the trot in order to be effective in the world of a David Archuleta fan club. The moment we thought we had conquered one mountain another loomed in the horizon. Looking back it’s amazing the number and diversity of hats that we have had to don to be up to scratch and the learning and skill acquiring process shows no signs of abating. Not to mention the terms and expressions that we, as fans, would be labeled with. It seemed like a whole linguistic universe sprung up overnight that was used to describe what it’s like to be a David Archuleta fan.
A couple more anniversaries have come and gone since that time and now we’re on the threshold of our 3rd. In many ways this adage of triple benefits apply to us too: David Archuleta-AAM-Friends; our holy trinity of sorts.
Appropriately this year as we celebrate the third anniversary of AAM’s founding, this axiom has proven it’s accuracy- it’s our red-letter day of anniversaries. Our idol came to town for a full concert – at long last – and gave us a couple of weeks of breathless anticipation and excitement culminating in the mother of all shows at Stadium Negara leaving us gobsmacked and flat as pancakes ( according to Trace 🙂 ). It’s the apex of our pyramid, the creme De la creme of our 3 years of existence as a David Archuleta fan community. The Genie really came through for us this year! And like the aftershocks of a powerful earthquake, the lingering effects of the law of thirds are still felt by all.
On this, our 3rd anniversary, we have thus far experienced a most wonderful year; David was up close and personal, we renewed our ties of friendship and last but definitely not least we inducted new caretakers into our fold.
Additionally it’s understood that the birthstone for the month of September – AAM’s ‘birth month’ is a sapphire. Sapphires are gemstones usually blue in color and gets a rating of 9 on the Mohs Scale of hardness whereas diamonds top the scale at 10. Apparently we are predestined to be enduring and long lasting 🙂 Isn’t that grand?
Happy anniversary AAM and AAM-ers :-)!
p/s: September also happens to be the month of Malaysia Day. September 16th to be exact – the REAL independence day 🙂
