David Archuleta Opens Up With New Song ‘Numb’: Watch a Lyric Video http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7565541/american-idol-david-archuleta-numb-lyric-video … via
“2016 is an exciting time to be a David Archuleta fan. The American Idol season 7 runner-up made his triumphant return earlier this year during the show’s series finale in the opening group number, and this summer he paired up with Jamesthemormon on a rap collaboration that was completely out of his wheelhouse, yet so much fun to see”.
“Now, Archuleta returns with the release of “Numb,” with a full video on the horizon.”
“It was during the time that I returned from my mission trip of two years in Chile. I was trying to get accustomed back to becoming a performer and an artist, and getting back into the whole business of it,” Archuleta tells Billboard.
David has talked about having a hard time adjusting to “civilian” life after returning home to Utah in March 2014 from his 2 year Mission in Chile. He thought he could resume his music career picking up wherever he left off. But the several meetings he had with people in the business in LA freaked him out.
He hadn’t realised he had changed! He wasn’t the same person anymore.
“I was so happy on my mission,” said David, “Why would I go back to a place that made me feel like I was stepping down?” He thought of quitting his singing career.
What began to turn the tide for him was writing a song about his confusion – about how he felt numb. Going into a Nashville writing session with Jamie Kennedy and Trent Dabbs, they asked David what was on his mind. David poured his heart out and the result was the new song NUMB where David expressed his need to continue a music career, but not in the same way as before. He had to do it HIS way.
Phew! After going through the Lyrics Video, I must say those lyrics are Stirring. Poignant. They are a far cry from the lyrics of David’s old songs such as Touch My Hand or even the later Don’t Run Away. David has definitely gone through some deep, intense emotions since those older songs. And he sure knows how to musically deliver depth and intensity! Everybody Hurts (especially the Live renditions) remains my favourite from him.
Is Numbness a state of Emotionlessness? Detachment?
Is it a cold feeling of apathy like the water where he is standing?
Or could it be a passion which hurts?
Is it a feeling of “Too Much”?
Or is it a feeling of “Nothing”?
The anguish in his voice in NUMB is apparent. But it does not compromise the melody. I can feel the confusion of a person who is at the crossroads of his life, which David was at the time.
When I first got to like David’s voice, he was of course a “sprouting fledgling” – but cute and amazing – both at the same time, a rare combination. I had then hoped the day would come when his music would be enhanced by his life’s experiences, when his depth would have grown. I wanted him to be in an even better place to demonstrate to the world what a tremendous artiste he could really be
“I’ve learned that’s it’s really important to just always be honest” David tells Billboard.
NUMB could be the beginning. The beginning of unadulterated honesty in revealing the depths of his heart. He was pretty amazing before giving the world good music and good messages. But now, NUMB could have exorcised the inhibitions, fears and insecurities of his youth.
I believe he has now truly taken a genuine rein of his true self ready to unleash what he really has in his heart – unpolished, undiluted emotions. I believe he is on the way to being a seriously great artiste. An artiste does not only send out inspirational messages; he has to practically bare his heart and soul.
If NUMB is anything to go by, I am hanging on – tenterhooks and all – to enjoy his new music in an album/EP early next year. 🙂
