  1. Hello, how’s everyone doing? I’m sorry I’ve been missing for quite some time. But here I am now! Hope everyone’s doing fine :).

Zach, I like this post. I think I share most, if not all, of your opinions here. My favourite has got to be his cover of Sarah McLachlan’s Angel. To be honest, I have ALWAYS wanted David to sing that song, even before it was announced that it will be a part of his album, and also, even before I got to know from CoS that it’s one of his top favourite songs. So you can imagine how excited I was when it was announced! And I was not at all disappointed when it was released, that’s for sure!

But as a whole, what I like about this album is David’s voice. It’s like, from his voice alone, you can sense that he’s trying hard to relay his messages through the songs. I’m not sure if I actually got them, but maybe I wasn’t trying hard enough. I just don’t understand why he wants us to “know what it feels like for him” so much. But there must be a good reason though.

Whatever it is, I can’t wait for him to come back and sing the songs from BEGIN. live. Just have to be patient :).

Thank you for your detailed analysis of the album. 🙂

I agree in most parts with you.
My connection with Angel, EH, DGU and Broken is total and absolute – they are gems. 🙂

I also agree with Pride not being David’s style of singing and that he should stay away from hard rock. His voice is too smooth and silky and probably lacks the edge that is required of this genre of songs.

BOTW is not one of my favourites in the album for the simple reason that I feel that this song needs a different kind of emotions.

Unlike you, I absolutely love SOWK. The beat and pace and the way David sings it, makes me feel like I want to chug along with him on a hay-cart, and singing along with him.

I like BSMS very much. For me, it is the melancholic tone of his singing here that draws me to the song. Being accompanied with the Cello sealed it for me.

For me, the album has grown on me more and more. Even BOTW is gradually moving its way towards a place in my heart.

That’s true, it’s not ours to reason why he named the album BEGIN. or why he included a hymn. He is a true artiste – and artistes speak or sing from their feelings and emotions at the time of expresing them.

BSMS is the last track in the album. He probably wants to demonstrate to his fans, his innermost emotions and frame of mind at that time just before his departure.

  3. elynna!

Hey how are you? It’s been so long. 🙂
I love David’s Angel too. It’s one I play over and over again.

Yes, the way David sings, it’s like he means every word.
I think, the strongest feeling we have with David is a “heart connection”.
That’s why he wants very much for us ” to know what it feels like for him”.

Do pop in more often. 🙂

  4. Wow! Zach, you are a good writer!

Your thought-provoking review of BEGIN. are spot on. Your high rating of those songs are my favourite, too! I’m now getting use to hearing David’s tender, sugary, buttery vocal on these ballad songs and I still wish he could put out one faster pop number on it! 🙂

  5. Hey Zach,

That was indeed a very indepth review! Thanks for taking your time to do this.

I like that you think BEGIN. could possibly persuade non fans to give David a chance. Lets hope this will happen. LOL you are right, a good quality headphones do make a huge difference!

As with everything else, we all have our personal opinions regarding those covers. I actually like your lowest rating songs very much ie SOWK, Pride and BSMS. Perhaps when we see David sings them live he’ll impress many others to really think otherwise 🙂

Indeed Zach is a good writer. He should write for us more often. 🙂

Haha you are still going on about wanting David to sing fast happy songs. No doubt I would welcome him singing fast or slow or happy or whatever kinda songs, I still believe haunting, soulful, tender, emotional songs are his forte. 🙂

I don’t use headphones because I get a constant ring in my eardrums after using them Lol!
But I do put on the volume very (and I mean VERY) loud when I listen to David! 😀

  8. Hey guys, I just got an Eureka moment just now as to why there is a period after the word Begin.
I believe it denotes an emphasis. Let me try to explain:

If there had been no period, we could ask: Begin what?
But when he says BEGIN. (with a period), it’s almost tantamount to an order…an instruction…a direction… a message given…
Telling us to begin something…begin to do things…begin to do what we’ve always wanted to do…begin to take charge …

    Like…Listen. (with a period)
    Do. (with a period)
    Go. (with a period)

Hope I’m making sense. If I’m not, perhaps I’m a little blur in the head and need to go to bed. 😀
    Ok la…goodnite…bedtime. 🙂

  9. Hey Zach 🙂 I like your review. It’s wonderfully analytical hehe. Oh.. and about Angel being one of the best songs on the album, I second the motion. That song absolutely killed me. Even when Sarah Maclachlan sang it. David singing it made it exponentially more heartbreakingly beautiful. :’)
