Anne Marie Chandy of the Star paper is an avid fan of American Idol and, bless her heart, seems to think very highly of David. In her latest article on the present season she has come up with a hall of fame list on the best vocal performances on Idol from past seasons:

Best of the best
By Anne Marie Chandy
I HAVE a whole bank of memories when it comes to American Idol performances over the last few years. And I revisit them from time to time thanks to YouTube, which is why I find it so hard to like this season’s contestants – they just fall short of expectations as compared to my favourites from previous years.
For the longest time, I thought I’d never survive not being able to watch Bo Bice strut his stuff every Wednesday night. Then I found myself all hung up over Elliott Yamin. Once David Archuleta came along, I was convinced he was the true American Idol I’d been waiting for. But then Adam Lambert surfaced.
Sadly, the streak seems to have discontinued this year and I’m finding it hard to even remember one noteworthy performance … okay, I’ll give Crystal Bowersox props for her People Get Ready performance last week but apart from that, nothing really tickled my fancy too much.
Here are five performances of all time which I rate the best of the best (in no particular order). I’d rather watch reruns of these any day of the week than face this year’s final:
David Archuleta – Imagine, 2008: Until Archuleta emerged, I would have loathed the idea of anyone other than John Lennon singing Imagine, let alone changing it up and trying to make it their own. But little Archuleta came, he sang, he conquered. He owned the stage and there was no way anyone watching that performance could have not been touched by it. Another vocal masterclass.
I won’t bother to post the rest of her list here. But if you’re interested you can go to her article, Best of the best , to see if your favourite is on the list. I would also add the following performances by David, during and after Idol, to his impressive resume of vocal masterclasses:
Somebody Out There, Columbus Ohio – this song is my absolute favourite, so far, of David’s original material so every time he sings it, it’s a vocal masterclass 🙂
My Hands, Madison Wisconsin – I may be wrong but i think this was the first time that David sang this song with an a capella ending in concert.
I\’ll Be, Rockford Illinois – I added this to the list because I love this song by Edwin McCain and to hear David sing it is just amazing.
Did I leave out any from my list? I’m sure some of you may have your own favourite performance. Let us know in the comment section 🙂
