Our Everyday-Valentine
The origin of Valentine’s Day seems to have stemmed from so many different legends – from pagan festivals to both Christian and Roman traditions.
Modern times, however, have deviated from history/myth and brought about our own different kind of celebrations and trends to revolve around candlelight dinners, gifts of flowers and chocolates; we run home with a bunch of expensive roses (it’s a Must since it is Valentine’s Day)…we dress to the hilt to go to a posh and “romantic” restaurant (because it’s Valentine’s Day)…we order a dish described as “romantic” on a menu decorated with pretty hearts (because it’s Valentine’s Day)…we send dither sexy and come-hither looks to our dining partner (because..hey! it’s Valentine’s Day!) … we do all the “love” and “romantic” stuff BECAUSE it is February 14.
To me, it all sounds rather robotic and regimentally fake. Do you think we need a Valentine’s Day?
I say: YES. And, in the same breath, I say: NO.
I’m all for celebrating love. Tactility and the demonstration of love are all desired aspects in the manifestation of what we call “love”. The question I would like to put to you is, are we to remember that truth ONLY on one day of the year? What about the other 364 days?
I say: We celebrate Valentine’s Day everyday of the year … any day … any hour. Including February 14. Whenever we want to show it … and whenever our loved ones need it. We do not need a stipulated date to love and to demonstrate that love.
It ails me to think that we are so very busy in our daily lives that we are rendered incapable of finding a little time to give our loved ones, now and again, a squeeze of the hand … a hug or a smile …some words of affection or assurance … even occasionally a bunch of flowers or a candlelight dinner or a box of chocolates to make them happy? (I know liying won’t complain about the chocs! haha!) Do we want to succumb to a more-or-less commercial con of an annual overly hyped-up date when roses cost more than 10 ringgit a stalk and dinners costing a bomb?
Love should constantly flow over from our hearts. Our hearts overflow when it is filled. We must renew that flow everyday – every hour. Not when the calendar dictates us to do so.
Let us continue to celebrate Valentine’s Day with love, not necessarily the fiscal kind - and also ALL the other days of the year. If you recall, David does not think about Valentine’s Day. He celebrates everyday of his life with love … and the show of love. So then:
