I’m not going to dwell on the fact that season 7 runner-up David Archuleta didn’t give his strongest outing Wednesday night on “American Idol.”

I’m going to forgive his par comeback performance of his third single, “Touch my hand.” After all, he has been ill for the past week. It was still better than most.

Seeing our little Archie back on the Idol stage brought back some memories, but it was different somehow. His confidence and stage presence skyrocketed him past all his performances from a year ago – combined. My how he has grown as an artist. I’ve known it ever since I saw him on the American Idol Live Tour last summer, but I suspect millions more found it out just this week as he bounced around the stage with the huge smile on his face and more swagger than he had ever shown before.

There will always be a gigantic place in my musical soul for David Archuleta, no matter how successful he is in the eyes of the mainstream pop music industry. His voice is undeniable, and his aura just makes you want to smile and root for him. Part of my, shall we say, obsession last season was watching interview after interview and reading article after article about that kid. I almost feel like I know him personally. He is a genuinely good guy who avoids confrontation, appreciates every opportunity that comes his way and likes to create music with meaning. I have so much respect for him and look up to him in so many ways, despite him being six whole years younger than I am. Plus, he’s a fantastic role model for younger kids.

My experience at the Idol tour proved to me just how much of an effect he has on people. I attended the Kansas City concert – which is the hometown of David Cook. Of course, 99 percent of the crowd were clad in DC attire and looking at me strangely in my “No one sings it betta than David Archuleta” T-shirt. (Yes, you read that correctly.) But by the second song in Archie’s set, he had the Cook crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. I mean, EVERYONE was standing and screaming. I was so proud as an Archie fan and as a Kansas City native for them to show such respect for the former nemesis. And it’s not an easy audience to please; we love our hometown heroes.

David Archuleta performs “Touch My Hand” in his return to “American Idol,” comes out with that big grin, and a great tone as he launches into the song.
He’s a little flat vocally I think; the song’s sedate at the start, but starts to take off in the chorus. His voice loosens up too; he’s just enjoyable to listen to, and it makes you smile to see how happy he is singing up there.
Ryan chats him up, David’s off to the UK tomorrow, is out of breath as always. He gives Allison a big hug and shakes Anoop’s hand. Tells them they both have awesome voices, and you don’t have to win the show to live your dream.
He’s really a nice guy; kind of funny to hear him giving career advice, but he’s come a long way in just a year.

The historic American Idol save was cashed in last week and all of America waited to see if Matt Giraud’s luck had run out during tonight’s results show. But before all the drama unfolded, last season’s second place finisher David Archuleta hit the stage.
David performed his third single, the infectious Touch My Hand and sent the audience into a swooning frenzy. Archie stepped up his stage presence x50! No surprise with the vocals, darn near perfect as always.
Archuperfect also gave the bottom two contestants some great advice and briefly talked about his tour with our other favorite youngster Demi Lovato before leaving the Idol stage.

But before the second elimination, last year’s runner-up, David Archuleta, returned to sing. He was in excellent voice on “Touch My Hand,” and he offered a reminder that you don’t have to win “Idol” to succeed big time.

On his recent solo tour it was the opening song of his show. His voice sounds deeper than last year! I think he may still be suffering the effects of a cold he had recently — His voice wasn’t quite as sharp as when I saw him last month in Reno. It was a nice touch to have him give advice to Anoop and Allison after his performance.

But before we could get to the final elimination, an old friend from last season stopped by to serenade us. It was time for Season 7’s Runner-Up, David Archuleta, as he sang his newest single “Touch My Hand.” This was my first time hearing this song (though I’d heard his other two singles on the radio and really enjoyed them). His lower register seemed a little off, but otherwise he sounded pretty good. The most surprising thing about Archie was his performance. I guess somewhere between losing the crown last year, then going on “Idol’s” tour and then touring solo, he learned to be a little less awkward and little more animated. His performance was really good!! Plus, is it just me, or does Mr. Smiley seem like the most humble teen ever?

The hour included Paula Abdul’s choreography for the opening group number, a not very danceable medley of songs by aging disco hit-makers, and a performance by former Idol runner-up David Archuleta. The Gracious: After singing, Archuleta walked over to Desai and Iraheta, who was not eliminated, but was in the bottom three, and told them that their journey doesn’t end here if eliminated. Archuleta, incredibly genuine and humble, showed some class when he could have easily used all of his airtime to promote his album.

The 18-year-old pinup idol performed his single, Touch My Hand, on the results show Wednesday.

He told recently-eliminated contestants Anoop Desai and Lil’ Rounds that they have great voices and that there’s plenty of opportunity once the show has come and gone.

He should know — after losing in a nail-biter to David Cook last spring, Archuleta already had his self-titled debut album burning up the charts by summer.

The young talent told host Ryan Seacrest he is headed off to the UK to tour. If his popularity carries over the pond — and we think it will — the Brits might be in for the second-coming of Beatle-mania.
